I spend a lot of time...

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 22, 2009, 4:14 PM

...trying to decide what I should focus on. For years and years, I've come to no comfortable conclusion. Like an old man trying to remember the good old days, logic slowly came to my mind. Trying to decide what to start on never works. I think what might really help me out is spending time finishing something instead.

The question is, what?

I've started and abandoned countless comics over the course of the last several years, but I've managed to boil the decision down to three unfinished projects:

Jet Dancer 1:1 inks by Dualmask
...because it's my latest project. (Total pages: 12) Though, I haven't drawn all the pages yet, and I'm not 100% comfortable with Jet Dancer's storyline right now.

WCL 1:1 by Dualmask
...because it's based on my greatest and most ambitious project, with a strong story already in place. All of the pages for the chapter (total pages: 9) have already been penciled, and need to be inked, colored and lettered. However, the artwork is over a year old and it might serve me better to do it all over.

Jet vs. K'alluvia Page 1 by Dualmask
...because the comic has the most forward progress of the three (one page fully colored, the second page mostly colored and all the rest of the pages penciled already). (Total pages: 8) However, it's more of a side story in regards to the Jet Dancer universe/storyline and isn't something I intend to print or sell. Although it's also true that I kind of owe it to :iconhulkdaddyg: to finish it.

Because my WEAPON Combat League story is the most stable and complete concept of anything I've ever come up with, I find myself leaning in that direction, but I also know you guys enjoy seeing Jet. I'm thinking I might hold a poll, but not immediately.

Opinions welcome...questions too.

I Like Jet Dancer myself but me going for half dress superbabes is not a revelation to anyone. Still, I say go with what moves you the most. Nothing worse that working on a project your not feeling. Especially if it's creative.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I really like drawing Jet Dancer, but that's all I like about Jet Dancer, her appearance. I don't think it's enough right now.

Can't blame you there. In fact it may frustrate you more. Liking the one aspect but just not be able to develop a story that keeps you going.

The more I think about it, the stronger I agree with that statement.

If I may ask, I actually have several questions;

1) What is it about Jet's storyline you do not like?

2) Do you really want to add your inproved drawing ability to a page that's over a year old (talking about the WCL comic)?

and finally, 3) what does :iconhulkdaddyg: feel about this project? After all, it's been months since you did this page.

Personally, as someone whom experiences this way too often, I suggest that you do a page of WCL, and see how you feel after that. That's what I'm doing with Masozi and Yomiko.

Questions are fun. I love answering them.

1) When I first came up with the plan to create a Jet Dancer graphic novel, I figured, I needed to get away from my usual heavy-handed storytelling (if you only knew the depth of Nia Black's storyline and the complexities of WCL) so I went for something simplistic. But in the process, I realized that Jet Dancer, while a great piece of eye candy, was sorely lacking in substance. My plan was to frame Jet taking on some of the other "SW Girls" that I introduced a few months back, wrapped around a story about a scientist trying to obtain pieces of technology she needed to build a super-mech, which Jet would have to defeat. But when I got to the later planning stages, I couldn't shake the feeling that the story was totally wrong for Jet. It wasn't built with her in mind; I built a generic tale and threw Jet in it. So I felt I needed to go back and rethink what I meant for Jet Dancer to be about. Fortunately, the first 12 pages of that book weren't really affected by that decision change (they're more or less introductory) so I'm still able to work on them.

2) To be fair, I've found that I can make my art look dramatically better when I digitally ink and color. Pages 2-9 of that WCL comic look kind of weak in pencil form, but I like the way that fully colored first page looks even to this day, even though I finished it last November (the lettering is suspect though). Redrawing it is something I'm pondering, but it may not even be necessary. However, there's a preceding chapter in the WCL storyline that I haven't drawn yet...I could work on that instead--with updated skills--and then "catch up" to the chapter I already have.

3) :iconhulkdaddyg: certainly isn't pressuring me about the comic, and really, I think he'd understand if I wanted to put it low on my list of priorities simply due to the fact that it has been a long time and I have more pressing concepts brewing (not to mention, school and stuff). The thing is, because of the progress I've made on it, it serves as proof that I can put Jet Dancer in a decent comic and if I finish it, I will have proven to myself that I can actually finish what I start. So any of the three projects is viable for different reasons.

But like I said, WCL is the concept with the strong story already in place, so I think I agree that at least seeing what I can do with the WCL comic approach via a single page is good for a start.

Making decisions is hard, particularly when all can be good or all can be bad.
