Callsign: Lumina by Dualmask Callsign: Lumina by Dualmask
A little something I sketched up during my lunch break to fight off art block, frustration, what have you. Just wanted to sketch one of my easiest to draw, most fun characters, and I wanted to try using Manga Studio to do some crosshatching and the like--natural-type sketching instead of super-clean line art. It's not neat like my usual stuff, but I had fun with it anyway. Took about an hour.

Faith Roberts/Lumina is part of my WEAPON Combat League concept.

Beautiful work man. I'm a big fan of sketchy lines.

The roughness adds a lot of character to the drawing, I think. I like the slight roughness added to the shading- it goes well with the rest, and feels almost hand-painted.

Thanks! I learned a bit about myself when drawing this and the others like it. I am really a stickler for line quality and perfectionism, spending too much time on elements of the illustration that do nothing for its final quality. I need to loosen up a lot more, not just in how I start drawings but also how I finish them. And I need to focus more on what I'm drawing and less on how well I'm drawing it.

I think you did a great job here. The proportions are great and she looks like if she walked off the page, she would be able to stand with no issues. That's the main reason I like your art. I'm curious about the fist that is bawled up...is that more robotic or is it gloved. It kind of gives me the robotic hand feel. The coloring...well, your colorings are always on point!

Did you do all of this in Manga Studio? I know you were beginning to work in it more. I'm trying to do the same thing myself. Its a powerful program!

Glad you like it!

The hands are supposed to be covered in armored gloves, but I actually drew her hands way too small.

Yeah, I did this 100% in Manga Studio. I really love using it for all my art these days.

Ah ok, that would make sense then since you drew them smaller. Still an awesome drawing!

I'm starting to really get into Manga studio...the sketching engine in the program is so great that I'm trying to just sketch there and get rid of paper all together. I'm good at inking in the program and really wanted to work on my coloring, along with sketching. Any pointers?

Keep up the awesome artwork!

I think it depends on the kind of work you want to do, as well as the tools you're using. I've gotten very comfortable with using the pencil tools--the Darker Pencil and Rough Pencil are my favorites. I actually use the Darker Pencil for inking. I formerly used the G-Pen, but it's a little loose-feeling for my tastes now. Tweak the stabilizer settings and also make use of the pen pressure settings (under the File menu with an image open) so you can get your stylus feeling just the way you want it.

Explore the special rulers and "direct" objects (U on the keyboard) to make things like drawing straight lines and curves easier. Everything from symmetry and perspective rulers to comic panel layout functions can be found there.

Thanks!

Great points, thanks a lot! I am defintely going to look into those now. I am working on a sketch at the moment. Have you been able to replicate you're glowing effects in Manga Studio?

The functions are there (layer blending modes, blur effects, etc.), but I have to say it doesn't quite feel the same. When it's time for the special effects, that's when I go back to Photoshop. I'm just more comfortable there.

I can understand that. I have noticed that they are there but it seems like its not as vivid as the glowing effects of PS. I tried to use it when coloring the fire of one of the characters I just did.

Me...just busy with commissions and the like. I'm about to start some new things...getting tired of doing things I don't enjoy so I'm looking to change directions a bit.

I'm still going to be doing illustrations, color work and the like, but I think I'm done with the whole comics thing. It's just not enjoyable to me anymore. I want to learn something new and seriously try indie game development, just for the heck of it.
