Bridget - Photoshop Touch by Dualmask Bridget - Photoshop Touch by Dualmask
EDIT: No more shiny wood. Also changed the color of her, ahem, clothes to better separate them from everything else, particularly the chains.

RPB Bridget in color.

This might look a little different from my usual color work. The reason is because this is the first image I fully cel-shaded using my Toshiba Thrive Android tablet [link] and Photoshop Touch [link]

It was a nightmare at first.

As I mentioned before, the touch screen/capacitive stylus combo... a Wacom it is not. Making selections was tough due to the lack of precision--at times it was easier to use my finger than the stylus. (I really hate that there's no pen tool.) I cannot begin to tell you how much work that chain was to select. But the interface is designed well enough to have the options for adding to and subtracting from selections in an easily-accessible place for my off-hand thumb, which made editing selections pretty painless.

Fortunately it does at least have the regular and polygonal lasso tools, with the option to turn on or off anti-aliasing. Unfortunately the magic wand does NOT have the AA option for some reason, so some of my flats were muddy and blurry at the edges. It didn't help that I was laying flats on a pencil drawing instead of a digital ink and that PS Touch only lets you zoom in up to a meager 400%.

But other than that, it went rather well. I used eight layers altogether and, while I can't give a specific time measurement because I was doing it off and on during bus trips to and from work, I don't think the working time on this was more than four hours altogether. While there's quite a bit to complain about and a bit of a learning curve, I can't whine too much because I was capable of coloring like this on a mobile device, using a simplified version of my regular coloring method, with an app that only cost $10. Can't really beat that.

Neat backstory; I like the layered composition; having the army in the background + the morning star up front.

The perspective is okay, but it's still a bit wonky here & there. If the logs land chain ying flat are anything to go by, the horizon would be lower; it would be getting clipped by the amazon's pelvis, not her torso. Her left leg is what really makes it feel off as it's resting on a higher plane than her right leg.

Additionally, the line-work of the dirt behind her is too consistent. That is, the horizontal strokes are all equidistant from each other; this causes the image to feel flat. Rather, the strokes should get more bunched up as they get closer to the horizon (remember, the horizon line should be at her pelvis!), and get thinner or reduce in opacity. This adds to the illusion of depth better.

Design-wise, it seems to work, though a bit on the simple side. One thing I'm not liking is the padlock on her loincloth. Does not compute. :| And at the very least it'd be cool if her metal cuffs were the same color and material as the crown, or vice versa.

Anyway, yeah- I just felt like I needed to properly explain the rating I gave. Hope it all helps ~

Damn man, I knew this would be even more awesome when you had a chance to put color to her. I'm really feeling this image. You chose all the right colors. This looks like a screen shot from an animation.
Very nice work.

Thanks! It was because of your recommendation that I opted to color it.

haha I love how her loincloth had a padlock holding it together! That said, not bad for doing this on a bus, which I imagine was not a smooth ride.

You seem to be the only one who noticed the padlock...I really thought that would get more attention than it did. Perhaps it was too subtle. :D Glad you like it! Let's just say it's a good thing PS Touch's undo function is very reliable.

Acknowledging your trouble in coloring this picture, I still think it turned out very well. The color choices, in particular, really set this image off. I really like how you've used the varying similar tones to create a striking effect. It's quite a strong piece in many ways, and hopefully you'll be able to take what you've learned and do more with a bit less trouble. Overall, it's great!

Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised with how it all turned out. It was definitely hard getting used to, but once I got the hang of it, it wasn't so much difficult as it just took a lot longer. Photoshop is a lot different when you don't have any keyboard shortcuts to rely upon. Just filling a selection alone is a three-step process. But the important thing is that I can do it and as I get more accustomed to it, it will get easier and faster.

I can see why you might say coloring this was such a nightmare, however I think this is an excellent job at coloring it. I really like the choices of warm colors. :)

Thanks! Surprisingly when I loaded it from the tablet to my PC it didn't look much different; I thought there would be variances in the colors due to the different kinds of monitors, but that wasn't the case at all. It makes me happy to have a portable device I can do this kind of work on. It's bound to get faster and easier if I practice more.

Yep, practice will show it's rewards in time. It's just like studying for college.

...Which incidentally, is what I'm doing right now :P

Personally, I quite like your job on the metal here.

The wood, however, is too shiny.

Yeah, probably should have left the highlights off of them. I could probably get rid of them...I don't think I flattened it. Still getting used to the software.

Well, there's more than one way to solve a wood problem. I'm sure you'll arrive at a solution.
