“Energy flow OK…”
“Power cells OK…”
“Plasma blaster OK…”
“All systems green…”

She looked downward from atop the Proteus Corporation skyscraper, gazing at the chaos below. Automatons once developed to help humanity had turned on them. They were built to aid in construction, transportation and demolition, and all at once, as if planned, they started to “malfunction”, vehicles running off the road, crashing into buildings and injuring and even killing the populace.

But one young woman, Megan Carter, saw it coming. She worked on the project, but she never trusted the department heads. They had been inspired by the pharmaceutical industry. Create the problem, and then sell the cure. They programmed a virus into all of their machines, and meant to trigger them surreptitiously, only a few at a time, then make money by selling the ‘antivirus’, which would only be a short-term cure. But even the department heads could not have known the megalomaniacal tendencies of Dr. Cassius Carter, who wrote the virus. He would trigger them all at once, and only he would have the real panacea—and he wrote an extra command into the virus, enabling him to command the automatons himself.

One thing he didn’t count on was his assistant and (now ex-) wife Megan, who studied the technology along with him, and fashioned herself a battle suit enabling her to take the fight to them, to protect herself and others. The day had come. She didn’t have time to test the suit’s features. The world was in trouble and unless she could find a way to stop the virus, and her ex-husband, everyone and everything was at the mercy of her former lover’s soulless automatons.

Megan leapt from the roof and opened fire, her plasma energy tearing through an out-of-control medical mech flinging syringes like throwing daggers, leaving it in pieces as she landed in a three-point stance on the ground below, leaving a crater and breathing hard. She stood up and saw numerous bipedal droids with arm cannons—police mechs—rushing toward her.

Megan wheeled around and opened fire.

Like it? Wear it! Or put her on other stuff... :)

"Megan", inspired very loosely by Mega Man, was something I roughed up simply and threw together in an attempt to produce a less time consuming illustration, after the off-and-on week I spent developing Chandra, girl #16.

She was wearing a two piece bikini with her armor at first, then I realized that many of the girls I've drawn so far--almost all of them, really--had exposed midriffs. For the sake of variety I covered up her abdomen.

There's a lot I would do with this if I wanted to spend more time on it--maybe make a futuristic backdrop or have her shooting something...but I'm going to move ahead for now.

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of it, but I never saw it as a piece that was really much better than a lot of work I've done. The fact that people like this so much means I have much to learn about developing my sense of taste. Glad it appeals so much!

I like that shiny armor! It looks great as a standalone pic, but if you wanted to a background would work just fine.

Glad you like it! This one seems to be a hit with a lot of people, even sold something with her on Redbubble. I'm happy with it but I didn't put a great deal of extra effort into it, so I feel like there's something appealing about it I can't put my finger on.

Everything about this just sort of comes together correctly.
- The pose is well done and works with her figure.
- That blue color scheme is a good combination with the skin tone you chose.
- It's Mega Man-esque enough to see the homage, but it's still uniquely a Dualmask costume design.
- The shading and shine effects are on point, and little details like the graded tint on the sunglass/goggles help.

Seriously.  This is good stuff!

There's an interesting dynamism to her pose, and the blue costume color is strong. It's an interesting and unified design, and if you wanted to explore her look further I think it would be similarly well-received.

Surprisingly, that bothers me a bit...because it was all instinct, not planned. I think a similar thing happened when I first designed Jet Dancer; something about her just worked, but I'm not 100% sure what. I feel like I need to figure out what my design mentality is and how to harness it better, figure out why I kind of catch lightning in a bottle with some works and others seem to be more or less mundane.

Inspiration is a tricky thing. When it comes to good character design, I was inspired by JohnK's primer about characters:

johnkstuff.blogspot.ca/2007/08…

Not to say I'm all that good at it, but it's still something to think about. When I look at Megan, I see several elements that he notes. Maybe the key is the aesthetic, or as JohnK notes, the pleasing arrangement of shapes, which I think your character has, along with readability.

That's a great read; I need to peruse it in more detail. It makes me think about the specifics I had in my mind when I designed Jet... Design follows function. I knew what I wanted and I wasn't just building from some kind of template (the way I did with my WCL characters, by comparison).

Funny thing is the Mega Man idea didn't come to me until well into the drawing. :)
