"Renard’s like an animal…wild and free, baby!”

Another WCL quickie, this time of Richter's

teammate Renard Cross, a.k.a. Beast. He's a wild boy with sharp instincts and quick reflexes. He's also rather uncouth and rarely thinks before he speaks. How he ended up being best friends with the snobbish Richter is anyone's guess, but he's also one of the most formidable fighters in close range, making him the perfect teammate for a ranged specialist.

I think he should be in another pose....preferably showing his fighting abilities or powers

Probably. Since he's a melee fighter, the only way I could accurately display his abilities is in context, so I guess he'll have to be fighting someone.

The upper half of his torso looks great- the musculature, the movement, the foreshortening on his arms- all superb. The expression matches it well. My only problem is it feels like it is discontinuous with the lower half of his torso. Perhaps it's the movement of his left leg that throws me off. It's entirely possible that this is a physically possible position, but it looks somewhat awkward at this angle.

The left reaching claw is great- that's how foreshortening should be done. Very intimidating.

You're right, I did have some trouble getting his pose right. I was trying to make him look ferocious but I felt it was skewed a bit much. However, I didn't feel like erasing it anymore (I did quite a bit of that) and just pushed through it--it was just to be a quick warm-up sketch I do to keep myself drawing every day. I'm thinking I can probably remake that leg easily enough. Glad you like the rest! I was quite happy with how I arranged his upper body and the claws; perhaps too happy, and it made me pay less attention to the lower half.

The leg adjustment worked well, and cleaned up my concern with the pic. Like I said, the upper torso is very well-rendered. With that little tweak everything falls together well in a unified form.

Another solid action doodle, I must say. I'm trying to keep myself from using too many animal-like comparisons with Renard's pose, but there's really no doubting his WEAPON's qualities. The pose came out rather well, I think. This drawing definitely showcases Renard and his Beast WEAPON in a very clear way. Part of me is craving for a more dynamic angle, given Renard's fighting style, but I also feel like the direction that you went in serves the purpose of establishing the character better at the time.

Now that I think about it, I'm actually a little curious as to what your goal is with these doodles. Are these simply "just for fun" activities that you're doing, or do you have something bigger in mind as you're drawing these? In any case, this little project is starting to come along well, and I hope you can keep it up.

Thanks! I went through several attempts to get a more ferocious pose out of Renard, but it just wasn't clicking. I didn't want to outright steal a pose but I looked at plenty of Sabertooth, Slash Beast (from MMX4), Wolverine and related character images, but nothing was motivating me, so I tried to come up with something on my own. I'm going to try him again.

As for my goal? Right now I'm using these to keep myself drawing and stay motivated. Right now most of my 'serious' drawing time is spent working on commissions, and it can get a little tiresome always doing what others ask without doing anything for me, so I use these quick sketches (usually no more than 30 minutes) to loosen up. These might become cards or something later, but I do have other plans. I've started developing sprites of the characters along the lines of my Jet Dancer sprite (well, 'sprites' is not really accurate since I'm still in the middle of the first one

) and I'm thinking of building a game about WCL.

To be honest, I'm unbalanced a bit. Can't say no to commissions, but they're showing no signs of slowing down (some might say it's a great problem to have) and it's becoming increasingly difficult to concentrate on my own endeavors. I have to squeeze out what I can, when I can, so I don't lose focus on my goals.

It can be tough finding that spark of inspiration without ripping off something else at times, no? Given Renard's design, I think another cool source could have actually been some wild animals, provided that you could find some decent 'action' shots of them. Still, what you came up with is good, and since your focus is on simply drawing and maintaining a sort-of rhythm, you can't argue with the results.

I get it. So this is the 'pleasure' before the 'business' part of your art-related work (or maybe even after). Nothing wrong with that. I was actually wondering if this could have been part of a more serious plan to re-introduce the characters, which would have been cool. Nevertheless, your explanation makes me feel better, since I now know not to stress too much on details and just enjoy the work. I can let things get in the way of what should be simple stuff at times.
