For anyone interested in my coloring process, I'm attaching the .psd of my latest image, broken up into layers so you can see what went into it.

Hit download to get the file.

Needless to say, the file's pretty big. I did shrink the original file down so it wouldn't take 20 years to upload.

I even took the time to number every layer so you folks can see the general order I work in.

By the way, my approach to coloring images like this does not require the use of a tablet. I did not use a tablet for this, only PSCS4 and my optical mouse. The weapon of choice is the pen tool, which I use to make selections for all the shadows and highlights, in combination with stuff like blending modes, feathering, Gaussian blur, etc.

Should go without saying, but... feel free to download and use as a guide or whatever... but NOT to claim as your own.

And while I believe the way you did it, I gotta say: Ever since I first used a stylus & tablet, it just hasn't been the same without one. No mouse can match a stylus for dexterity. OTOH, I don't normally use the pen tool & maybe a mouse is best for that. (Figure if I wanted to do that, I'd open up Illustrator.)

I've just never been comfortable doing stroke-by-stroke drawing on the computer. I tried it, went with all the recommendations from many pros and highly-skilled artists who say "if you're serious about digital art, you need a tablet", but for me it's been nothing but hassle. That Fairchild drawing I did a while ago was me trying to see if new techniques could help me enjoy it more, but alas I just turned around and went back to the way that's been serving me well since mid-2008...good old pen tool-fueled cel-shading.

This method is nothing more than making selections and filling them with color, based around a vision and using blending modes to achieve that vision. I think a lot of beginning digital artists convince themselves that they MUST have a Wacom to get good results with digital art, but that's not exclusively true. It all depends on what methods work best for you.

Still, I keep an Intuos 3 around just in case something changes.

It's good that you've stayed with what works for you. If it's doing blocks of color with a mouse, why not? From what I've seen, it works for your stuff so far.

I'll see you in Artician-land.

Can't wait to try out your tutorial. Too but I still use PS 7. One day I'll get a better comp and an updated PS. Take care.

Well, I was using the same method back when I had PS7, so the same ideas apply. I can't think of anything I did with this image that wasn't possible in PS7.

Ahh I remember my mouse coloring days. Was really hard being a lefty and all :D.

This turned out really well and I really like the textures you used for the background :).

Thanks! I try and I try, but I just can't get the hang of relying on my Wacom. It's most likely because my lifestyle affords me a lot of time for traditional drawing and precious little for the digital side, so I need to get through my coloring as quickly and painlessly as possible. Pen tool FTW. :)

I got most of the textures from a CD that came with a digital coloring how-to book I bought a few years ago. They come in handy.

Hell it's worth downloading to see your process, my process is always different and crazy. Do you always use the same?

I might do more or less depending on the image, but the basic process I use is the same. This is one of the more elaborate ones for me. The main difference between this and previous works of mine is the texture layer, which, while simple to do, gave the whole image an added dimension I rarely think about.
